Back in the olden days before I had a molder and profile grinder (I had a good 1 1/4" spindle shaper) I hand ground knives on an 8" bench grinder. You will only have one knife that does the finish cut but that's ok on a shaper since feed speeds a relatively slow.

The exact hook angle of the knife slots or knife pockets in a cutter head is quite easy to determine if yours are not marked. Use the straight edge of a ruler, and with a pencil draw a straight line from tip of one moulding knife to the tip of the opposing moulding knife in the opposite side of the cutter head.

My mistake, in hindsight, was to file a double sided bevel in the hook before heat treat, there is nothing left to take out to get it back to a single sided hook blade. I managed to machine it to a flat edge in the hook and get it sharp but the next time a single sided gut hook is definitely the way to go. Regards, Ben December 30, 2018 at 8:02 PM
